They are deemed a threat to ape security and sentenced to death. Three twentieth century astronauts travel through a time warp and crash on Earth in 3085 A.D.. One of the astronauts is killed in the impact, and the two survivors, Alan Virdon and Pete Burke, find that they have returned to an Earth where their loved ones are long dead, where technological civilization has fallen, and where humanity is subjugated by intelligent, talking simians who live in jungle cities and preside over pastoral hinterlands.

After Galen accidentally kills a gorilla and is charged with murder, Virdon, Burke, and Galen all escape the ape city and are fugitives hunted by a determined gorilla named Urko.

Announced back in August, Last Frontier will fill in some of time gap between Dawn and War for the Planet of the Apes, as the tensions between man and ape are at their highest. He reads parts of the book and begins to doubt the history that he has been told: apes have always been dominant, and humans have always been inferior and subservient. The world is shocked by the appearance of three talking chimpanzees, who arrived mysteriously in a U.S. spacecraft.

They encounter a human who is experimenting with flight in a hang-glider he has built himself. They are all then declared enemies of the state and become fugitives. An astronaut crew crash-lands on a planet in the distant future where intelligent talking apes are the dominant species, and humans are the oppressed and enslaved. Galen is sentenced to death for his crime. The crash is also witnessed by a young chimpanzee who tells Both Virdon and Burke go back to their ship to check the ship's chronometer.

The chief of the town sacrifices unwilling humans to their god in a temple during a cult type ceremony. The series was written by brothers Scott and David Tipton, with artwork by Rachael Stott, her debut work.

Virdon insists on retrieving the ship's flight log in the hopes that they will be able to analyze it and be able to return to their own time period, but while they are at the ship, they are captured, and the old man is subsequently killed by a group of apes.
