The "First International Conference on Plastination" was actually entitled "Preservation of Biological …

The International Society for Plastination is a multidisciplinary organization, including people within all fields of science interested in the technique of Plastination. The Institute for Plastination, along with von Hagens, made their first showing of plastinated bodies in Japan in 1995, which drew more than three million visitors. Water and lipid tissues are replaced by curable polymers.

Plastination was a game‐changing invention for macroscopic anatomical preparation. In November 1979, Gunther von Hagens applied for a German patent, proposing the idea of preserving animal and vegetable tissues permanently by synthetic resin impregnation.

These unique medical teaching resources are made possible through the revolutionary preservation process of Plastination, invented by anatomist Dr. Gunther von Hagens, founder of von Hagens Plastination. As I remember, the attendance was close to 1 00 and even included some from outside the U.S.

To define plastination as an area of professional activity and provide a means of learning and practicing plastination as a career.Well, that's the whole story in outline.
Eighty people were registered, all from the United States. The "Second International Conference on Plastination" was held in San Francisco during April of 1984. In this process, water and lipids in biological tissues are replaced by curable polymers (silicone, epoxy, polyester) which are hardened, resulting in dry, odorless and durable specimens.
The need for this kind of conference expressed by those in attendance encouraged us to do a better job on the next one.3. The 1st International Congress of Plastination was organized by Harmon Bickley in 1982 at The University of Texas in San Antonio, Texas, USA. is limiting the applications of exsiccation techniques in practice.

Despite the impact of the new method, there have been similar techniques in place before.

The "Sixth International Conference on Plastination" was held at Kingston, Ontario, Canada in 1992. Concern over consent of bodies being used in the plastination process has arisen. Besides the development of plastination techniques in sensu stricto, related techniques had a renaissance with new applications and developments, including corrosion casting and diaphonization methods. Plastination takes up to 1,500 hours of labor and a year to complete.

But perhaps it is time for the International Society for Plastination to become more of a broadly based membership organization and climb to even greater heights.

Showing interest in anatomy already as a young man he sneaked into an autopsy room at the age of 17, years before he decided to study medicine.

Over 20 years ago, von Hagens set up a For the first 20 years, plastination was used to preserve small specimens for medical study.

Our organization has been simple and pragmatic, by intention. Plastination is a technique or process used in anatomy to preserve bodies or body parts, first developed by Gunther von Hagens in 1977.
