Then the county will resume its half of a federally funded paving project that has closed the through-road between Buena Vista and Gunnison since 2017. Cottonwood Pass, after a few years of intermittent construction, is opening to traffic on Aug. 12, 2019, but travelers should be aware that portions of the road are yet to be paved. Horseshoe Meadow Road is usually open from Memorial Day until the first week of November, depending on snow conditions.

Gunnison County has said that their side of Cottonwood Pass will not be open until Aug. 12. But today was special, at least because I walked to the pass on mainly snow-covered roads.
Travelers should be aware that construction and paving operations continue so there will be restrictions.
