A serious car crash has closed the motorway for M1 traffic this afternoon near Milton Keynes.The incident happened at around 2.30pm on the southbound carriageway between junction 15 and 14, (Wednesday, July 22).Multiple cars were involved in the incident and the emergency services were dispatched to the scene.Highways England have said the southbound carriageway has been closed between the two junctions while the collision is dealt with.To help ensure queues do not build a diversion route has been put in place, and drivers are urged to follow the hollow circle diversion route symbol.There are queues on the northbound carriageway, which is believed to be due to onlookers.Northbound drivers are facing almost six-miles worth of delays due to the ongoing incident.There are some pockets of congestion heading southbound as drivers divert off the carriageway.Thames Valley Police and the East of England Ambulance Service have been approached for comment.After being closed for almost five hours, Highways England has confirmed the M1 has been cleared and the motorway has reopenedWhile there is a diversion in place for drivers approaching the incident, that doesn’t help those still stuck on the M1.It’s still not clear how long those motorists will be in the queue, a worrying thought for those with pets.Luckily, traffic is at such a standstill one dog owner has been able to take his pets for a walk down the carriageway.South Central Ambulance Service have issued an update regarding the crash.They have confirmed two lorries and two cars were involved, with two people taken to hospital.Highways England have said that trapped traffic has been released and is on the move.They have reopened lane three to allow this but the carriageway will continue to remain closed for other drivers.
