Actually, I think that in BEB there was no story to speak of, only inventions for the sake of them, and here there could well have been, should the narration be more straightforward and not so struggling for being “intriguing”, even if that means improbable character or plot development. I really appreciated that Joanne Harris chose to explore the idea that beneath the surface of race, color, and beliefs, people are essentially the same. This was a murder mystery but so wrapped in scented oils and chocolate and peaches that the story was sent drifting to the winds...early on in the book. I am a big fan of magical realism and the use of food as character in fiction (which Harris pretty much pioneered). Then I realized that the themes and topics covered here are far more serious than others she had addressed in previous works.

I did not like it in this book. Vianne, of course, rises to the challenge. For the families of those that disappeared, there are heartache and hope in equal measure.The wives of the missing men still wear red bindis on their foreheads, signifying their married status.Children are still waiting for their parents to come home - and no one has lost faith in finding Father Francis, or at least learning his true fate. Her work is extremely diverse, covering aspects of magic realism, suspense, historical fiction, mythology and fantasy. Actually more to the point I love Vianne Rocher. It's estimated that at least 100,000 people lost their lives.
