This array, also known as the WSRT (and sometimes Westerbork Synthese Radio Telescoop), was the premier interferometric imaging system in the world until the VLA went into operation, and has remained competitive for many kinds of work through aggressive hardware and software development. Originally comprising eight 25-meter antennae on a single east-west baseline, it now includes fourteen antennae spanning a maximum baseline of 3 km. The array may be seen in a Google Maps satellite image showing its east-west alignment and the arrangement of the various dishes.
