Death: You need to believe in things that aren't true. The beloved Hogfather - the jolly bearer of glee and pork-related gifts for children everywhere - has vanished. Highly saturated with myth and folklore and that complemented the work of Terry Pratchett well.

There are a few stabbings throughout the movie, but no blood, so this film should be fine for most 11+ tweens. He uses much narrating and footnotes which is very hard (if not impossible) to transform into a movie. Funny how half the reviews are trashing this series and half are raving.

The look was great but it wasn't Ankh-Morpork. I liked Michelle Dochery as the singularly stolid Susan. I'm being unfair, there are two or three things that are right with this TV adaptation.

It could have been worse I suppose and I could have paid the full asking price and the postage.

Susan: With tooth fairies? I was also a little nervous that it wouldn't live up to expectations.

So I watched this movie and....

How else can they become?

Death taking the role of the Hogfather and embracing it was quite good. Favorites: Being There (1979), State of Siege (1972), Diabolique (1955), In a Lonely Place (1950). Hogfathers? However I was pleased to give this, made for TV, movie 8 of 10 for a sterling effort. This cost me one of my 4 monthly rental choices.

Who was the narrator? anthill inside " and the egg timer on HEX . Disappointing to someone who knows how Pratchett can make a joke about the most serious elements of the human condition and distill it into what we all share as humans. The effects were a little crummy at times, Death's face was just a mask and the monster under the bed was just a bloke. By kidnapping and holding hostage the tooth fairy in order to use children's teeth to control their belief. Hogfather.

A very silly festive fairytale for children of all ages, with a no-nonsense (in the primmest, properest sense of the word), kick-ass heroine, set in a world that looks remarkably like ours, in a thaumaturgical, Victorian Gothic kind of way, considering it's actually a disc balanced on some elephants, which are balanced on a turtle. There was no feeling of Ankh-Morpork as the sprawling whore of a city she is--this could've been a Dickens set, reused.

Every one of these actors is talented and some of them shone but frankly I found the only other person I wanted to see on the screen was Peter Guinness; he had presence in his tiny bits that worked.

Sure, I missed a few funny character conversations (Like the "Give-the-Dean-a-bag-of-money-gnome" or the Cheerful Fairy), it also lacked certain elements of the book, including the YMPA, Igor's Bar or the Death of Rats (who is much more important in the book) but you cannot include everything from a 300 page novel into a say 100 page movie script. I did anyway. It's Hogswatch (equivalent to Christmas) on the Discworld and the Hogfather has gone missing, requiring Death to take his place while his granddaughter Susan endeavors to find out what has happened.
