These cartoon shorts were a place to experiment with visual and sound techniques, test out new technology, introduce concepts/characters (oh hi Donald Duck!) They're quite creative in places, with some neat environments and interesting gimmicks. These bosses – I’m looking at you, Grim Matchstick – are instead defeated by a mix of repetition, skill, and sheer luck. Technically, only local co-op is allowed, in keeping with the spirit of the retro games it is modelled on. A massive sci-fi/fantasy open-world RPG, exactly like every other massive sci-fi/fantasy open-world RPG. However, they lack the impact of the bosses, and often feel like a slog to get through.Boss fights can feel the same way on occasion, but the constant shifting into new stages helps them tick along at a decent pace.

Like all the villains from that era of cartoons, the bosses here are big personalities, and there are some seriously creative designs.

The old art style just doesn't do it for me.I really enjoyed this game when I played it on Xbox One, but the difficulty did eventually get the better of me.This game is great. Just because the diffculty is too high for the reviewer, doesnt make it a worse game. The hand-drawn animation – the swervy lines that bounce and undulate, the comically expressive faces, the way that Cuphead’s co-op partner Mugman drinks his own brain-fluid out of the straw that sticks out of his head – it’s all so full of character, so true to the Disney/Fleischer spirit, that even after 577 and 798 and 1,000 deaths you’ll still want to come back for more. Whether it’s an angry vegetable garden, a pair of boxing frogs, or a loving recreation of your all-time favourite Silly Symphony, the Cookie Carnival, there’s always something fun to watch, some new and lively animation to enjoy.Plus, Cuphead is so obviously a labour of love that it’s hard to ever get too annoyed at it. I got it on Switch in April and I absolutely loved it. Even though the various phases give you a rough idea how far through a fight you are, there's a general lack of feedback to your shots, and sometimes it feels as though you're not making a dent. The amazing visuals are accompanied by a fantastic jazz soundtrack to deliver the full presentational package -- it's brilliant.In terms of gameplay, this is a very straightforward experience. Perhaps it makes the payoff when you do conquer a boss all the sweeter.

Simple doesn't mean easy, though, and this game does everything it can to test you on these basic elements.The game puts most of its energy into boss battles, which are definitely the stars of the show.

These are more traditional platforming stages, but we found them to fall a little flat. Just learn what you need to do takes a few tries and a few practices.

And of course to support this talented studio.Everything from character design to old school animation to music is perfect and a clear labor of love. For me the learning curve is perfectly judged.I really want this game, but i am afraid of the difficulty. Amazing. It’s beautiful, and difficult, and kooky, and funny, and, in its latest PS4 iteration, a great way to hang out with distant friends.Cuphead is also Canadian, created by a pair of brothers, one of whom is based in Oakville, Ontario, while the other lives in Regina, Saskatchewan. 8/10 or 9/10 seems more like it.Everyone enjoys a little challenge. But again, the developer completely delivered on what they promised.If absolutey nothing else, everyone should experience the soundtrack of this game. It apes the rubber hose animation style (look it up) of early Fleischer and Disney, and it does so in spectacular fashion. I love the style, but i dont like wasting my money on something i will never see. The game is a masterpiece, of the most well crafted games ever, simply amazing and mind-boggling visuals! There are some more complex wrinkles, like being able to parry pink objects, and building up a special meter by shooting enemies, but mechanically speaking, this is pretty simple stuff. Even as we failed and failed again, there was comfort in being able to blame the WiFi, rather than our own ineptitude, every time we died.

Cuphead PS4 Review – Same Great Experience on a New Console. Having said that, I have double dipped and bought it again so I have it on PS4 and Switch nowI'd buy it if it had more difficulty options.
