Had we not gone into the museum itself, I would have learned nothing about the how/when the train came to be. It is really an expansive facility, with a main building, another display/maintenance building, a train departure building, a quail crossing, a park, and even a canine comfort rest area (no humans allowed except if accompanied by a dog).I visited on the 4th of July to see the Parade of Trains and to check it out. Great place to take your kids if they love trains. Sit by the window, and see absolutely nothing of value for your money. It is a little pricey but definitely fun we would go every month if it was more affordable to go on the train rides.
Recommended option. In the center of Carson City is the historical Railroad museum, and depot. It was also not the time of year for train rides.

There is a tiny area that has a train table and a little play kids train, but the rest are beautiful trains that you are not allowed to touch or climb on.
